An Application
Chances are high that Esther became queen because she took an insane risk. EST 2:14 tells us what the hundreds of girls in this contest were expected to do. Esther probably rejected that role (EX 20:14, LEV 19:29), treated Xerxes like any other human, and without getting undressed, talked to him all night long, appealing to his intellect rather than his instinct. She alone demonstrated beauty & brains, so was the obvious choice for queen: EST 2:17.
Connect the Dots
EST 2:5 may have been Mordecai's immediate ancestors, or reference to 1SA 9:1-2 and 2SA 16:5. / This was a pagan society, so many of the men (like that Memucan) and the women were just going around aimlessly feeling lucky (or prideful) when things worked out. As a child of God, Esther knew better (as did Daniel, DAN 6:3-4). She had God's word to give her life structure (including but not limited to PR 31:10-31) so she was ready when her day came to see the king.
